Hi! We’ve finally found each other! If you are like me, you go right to the “ABOUT” section to check people out. So what’s my story, you wonder?

Well, probably like you, for years I basically ignored my health. Okay, ignored isn’t the right word… I guess I really didn’t give it much thought one way or another. As women, we tend to take our “caretaker” roles very seriously, right? And that usually means overcommitting, too much stress, too many microwaved meals with busy children, eating on the run, drinks and restaurants on the weekends, very little self-care (who has time for that?), and interrupted sleep or hormonal issues. Monday morning comes and it’s: WASH, RINSE, REPEAT. Sound familiar?


Now from the outside, we seem to be handling our juggling act pretty well EXCEPT. . . that we slowly begin to get more and more exhausted as the years pass (even the coffee isn’t helping). The weight keeps creeping up, especially around the middle (no number of hours on the treadmill seems to be helping there). We start having more sleep issues and all sorts of other issues that we blame on periods, PMS, peri-menopause and beyond (it seems to be a catch-all for everything else going wrong with our bodies). No matter what we try and do to feel better, doctors usually give us 10 minutes in the office and a few prescriptions for what ails us. We blame it on aging - after all, we aren’t 25 anymore! Is this resonating with you?

 

My Discovery


My wake-up call came around the age of 48. I was minding my own business, dealing with the increased health issues that I, too, had chalked up to aging and peri-menopause, when I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease. That sure came out of left field: ME! NO WAY! HOW COULD I HAVE THAT! I thought that I was pretty healthy. I had been eating and cooking better, exercising and watching my weight.


For those of you who aren’t familiar with auto-immune diseases, something triggers the body’s immune system to attack itself. I saw countless doctors, none of whom could tell me when I got it, why or how I got it. I was told only that all auto-immune diseases are incurable, debilitating, and usually lead to multiple and more severe auto-immune conditions. I was prescribed three immune-suppressing drugs, to be taken for the rest of my life. Adding insult to injury, my daughter had one too, and hers had flared out of control. IT WAS TIME TO GET SERIOUS! I knew in my gut (no pun intended) that this was not the answer. I was not taking any prescription drugs, and I refused to believe that I couldn’t reverse this disease, or at least control it or put it into remission. I was determined to do whatever it took to get my daughter and me back on track, and feeling healthy and whole again. What I've Learned

I have spent the last 6+ years studying everything I can get my hands on regarding health. I’ve earned my certification as a health coach and I continue to keep learning as much as I can about our bodies, and about how our food and lifestyle choices affect our health. I now understand how intricate our systems are: it’s a balancing act of communication within the body and between these systems. When there is a breakdown of that communication, there is inflammation and illness.
